Floyd Mayweather vs Andre Berto Live
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Floyd Mayweather will fight Andre Berto
(30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12 in Las Vegas, according to several reports. An
official announcement is expected soon. The fight is supposed to be
Mayweather's last fight, but that isn't likely. While an expected easy victory
over Berto would improve Mayweather's record to 49-0, how could someone
claiming to be TBE [The Best Ever] end his career against a fighter who is on
the down stroke of his career? LIVEWATCH
Berto, a former champion, has lost three of his last six fights
and he does not have a quality win since he defeated Juan Urango in 2009.
Mayweather will fight Berto instead of quality opponents like Amir Khan (31-3,
19 knockouts), Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs), Timothy Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs), Kell
Brook (35-0, 24 KOs), middleweight Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) or Northeast
Ohio's own Shawn Porter (26-1, 16 KOs).It wasn't likely a Khan fight
could take
place in September because Khan, a Muslim, participated in Ramadan from June 17
through July 17. The fast would have had an impact on his training. But there
was not much of an excuse to fight the other contenders, unless Mayweather
plans to fight one of them next year. Like many others, Porter hoped to cash in
on a fight against Mayweather. More
Floyd Mayweather's choice of Andre Berto for his supposed final opponent on 12
September has been met with much criticism from fans. Britain's Amir Khan and
Kell Brook, the IBF welterweight champion plus Keith Thurman and even
middleweight king Gennady Golovkin were all hoped for by boxing enthusiasts but
instead welterweight Mayweather, 38, will take on Berto, who has lost three of
his last six fights. LIVE HERE
On the surface, considering Amir Khan was the supposed
frontrunner to face Mayweather next, this is not a particularly compelling
match-up. Truthfully speaking, having beaten Pacquiao, there are practically no
real compelling fights for Floyd at 147 lbs. But if you gave boxing fans the
option of paying $60 or $70 to watch Mayweather get an easy decision over
Berto, or to watch it on network television, they'd likely choose the one that
doesn't cost $60 or $70 to order. Mayweather is still the sport's top PPV draw,
and "disappointing" fights vs. Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo Alvarez
did absolutely nothing to change that for the worse. However, according to The
Sweet Science report, if Mayweather wins this one and the CBS broadcast goes well, his
50th (and presumably last) fight could also be on CBS.
